Esprit Park Rehabilitation: Project Status Timing: On November 18, 2021, SF Rec and Park Department (RecPark) announced a project construction start date of Q3 2022, and an end date of Q3 2023. (Original construction start date: Q3 2020. Published October 2018.) RecPark will close the entire park during construction. Any changes to that strategy will be conveyed via RecPark’s quarterly community engagement meeting, or you can reach out directly to the RecPark Rehabilitation project manager, Melinda Sullivan.
Funding: On November 15, 2021, RecPark requested $800,000 from the Eastern Neighborhoods Community Advisory Committee (EN CAC) to cover an expected budget increase for the project due to delays and inflation. On the same date, the EN CAC voted to allocate $800,000 of impact fees (the “Gap Funding“) for Central Waterfront Recreation and Open Space projects to the Esprit Park renovation project. Along with the funding, EN CAC has formally requested that - via a unanimously approved Memo - RecPark engage in robust, community-centered outreach, particularly when modifications are needed for budgetary reasons, and hold quarterly community meetings to keep stakeholders apprised of developments. The Gap Funding is in addition to $2,711,000 of impact fees specifically appropriated and transferred to the Recreation and Park Department (“RecPark“), and a $5 million grant from UCSF, both announced in 2017. This brings the projected and fully funded cost of the Esprit Park rehabilitation, focused on ground cover, drainage, sprinklers and forestry, to $8.5 million.
